If you’re a beginning guitar player, you might wonder if you must take electric guitar lessons first, or begin with acoustic guitar lessons. Or perhaps you’re the parent of an aspiring guitarist, and marveling what kind of lessons would be best for your child. This article describes a good deal of of the pros and cons of taking electric guitar lessons as a beginning student of the guitar.

The Pros of Electric Guitar Lessons

One huge vantage of electric guitars for beginners is that the strings are lighter, so as a beginning player, an electric guitar may be having little impact on your fingers than a steel-string acoustic guitar. However, nylon string acoustic guitars are also pretty easy on the fingers, so that’s another option if you’re worried when it comes to sore fingers when you’re just starting out.

Another advantage, ironically enough, is that you may exercise very quietly so as not to disturb other persons in your home. A solid body electric, unamplified, may scarcely be heard even from the next room. If you need to exercise when other people are at home, or specially if they’re asleep, an unamplified electric is just the thing.

A third reason why you might want to commence out on an electric would be if you only want to play electric. If you actually have no interest in ever playing an acoustic guitar, why not commence right in with an electric?

And finally, for parents, electrics are just cooler, peculiarly if you’re a kid. Having a cool looking, shiny electric guitar, and plugging into an amp that has some cool built in effects may genuinely help motivate your child to keep up with practicing.

And the Cons

An electric just isn’t as versatile and portable as an acoustic guitar. Let’s face it, if you want to play for a good deal of friends in the park, or play a song for your family in the living room, or even take your guitar to a picnic, not one thing beats an acoustic guitar. You don’t need to worry in regards to amps, cords, or having to find an electrical outlet. With an electric, you have more stuff that you have to carry around with you just in order to play a song.

If you learn to play an acoustic guitar first, moving to an electric later must be pretty easy. Going the other way, starting out on electric and moving to acoustic later, may be more challenging. Because an electric guitar takes much less hand strength in the fretting hand, and a lighter touch in the strumming hand, you may find it hard at basi to get a good sound when you switch to acoustic.

1BEWARE–Made for double *GFI* outlet!
By Allison
I purchased this light switch cover when I redecorated my teenage son’s bedroom in a guitar theme. The photo in the ad displays a switchplate cover for a regular (double) toggle (on/off) switch, which is what I needed. However, the cover shipped to me was for a double *GFI* outlet (the two openings in the switchplate cover are much larger than for a regular on/off toggle switch, so the cover is the wrong size and useless).

3Disappointed

Well I thought I was ordering what I saw in the picture but it was not what I received. It isn’t worth my time to send it back. I have contacted the seller so we will see what happens.

It is a plain plastic light switch covered with a picture….I could have done this myself if I had known.. Oh well live and learn.

Otherwise I think the product is ok, but for the price…next time I will see what I can do myself.
